Sleep Apnea Treatment, Simplified.

CPAP is not for everyone. If you struggle with the mask, hose, or noise, Inspire® might be the solution you've been waiting for. Inspire is the only FDA-approved obstructive sleep apnea treatment that works inside your body to treat the root cause of sleep apnea with just the click of a button. Explore all CPAP alternatives.

Unlike CPAP, which forces air into your airway with a mask, Inspire works from within. A small implanted device stimulates the hypoglossal nerve during sleep, keeping your airway open naturally. No mask. No hose. No noise.

How Inspire Works

1

You Turn It On

Before bed, use a small handheld remote to activate the device. It's as simple as pressing a button.

2

It Senses Breathing

A small sensor monitors your natural breathing pattern. When you inhale, the device detects it.

3

It Stimulates the Nerve

Mild stimulation moves the tongue forward slightly, keeping your airway open. You sleep naturally-no mask required.

The Science

Inspire stimulates the hypoglossal nerve (cranial nerve XII), which controls tongue movement. By gently activating this nerve in sync with your breathing, the device prevents your tongue from collapsing backward and blocking the airway-the root cause of obstructive sleep apnea. The stimulation is mild and typically not felt once you're asleep.

The Inspire Procedure: What to Expect

Outpatient Surgery (2-3 Hours)

Inspire implantation is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia by an Inspire-trained ENT surgeon. Most patients go home the same day. The surgeon makes 2-3 small incisions: one under the chin (for the stimulation lead), one in the upper chest (for the sensing lead and generator). The components are placed under the skin-no external hardware.

Recovery (1-2 Weeks)

Most patients return to desk work within 5-7 days and resume full activity within 2 weeks. Common side effects include mild soreness at incision sites, temporary tongue weakness or numbness, and sore throat. Pain is typically managed with over-the-counter medications. The device remains off during the initial healing period.

Activation (1 Month Post-Op)

After healing, you return to our clinic for device activation. We program the device, teach you how to use the remote, and gradually increase the stimulation strength over several weeks. This "ramping up" period allows your body to adapt to the sensation. Most patients reach therapeutic levels within 2-3 months.

Titration Sleep Study (3-6 Months Post-Op)

This is where we excel. Once the device is at a comfortable therapeutic level, we perform an in-lab titration study to fine-tune the settings. This advanced study (which many practices skip or cannot perform) ensures optimal efficacy. Dr. Jain adjusts the device based on real-time sleep data, maximizing your apnea reduction. This is why our outcomes consistently exceed national averages.

What "Success" Means

Inspire is considered successful if it reduces your AHI (apnea-hypopnea index) by at least 50% and to below 20 events per hour. Most patients achieve even better results. However, success is not just about numbers-it's about quality of life. Patients consistently report better sleep, reduced snoring, improved energy, and elimination of CPAP frustration.

Note: Approximately 70% of implanted patients meet FDA success criteria. Not everyone responds perfectly, which is why proper candidacy screening and advanced titration (our specialty) are critical.

Hidden Candidates: Our Research

Standard single-night testing often fails to qualify patients for Inspire. Our research (Poster 4, AASM 2026) showed that one in six (16.79%) Inspire candidates are missed by single-night testing. We use multi-night protocols to capture night-to-night variability, ensuring we don't miss qualified patients who would benefit from therapy. If you were told you "don't qualify," a second opinion may be worthwhile.

Insurance & Cost

Medicare & Commercial Insurance

Inspire is covered by Medicare and most major commercial insurance plans when FDA candidacy criteria are met. Coverage typically includes:

  • Pre-operative diagnostic testing
  • Drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE)
  • Surgical implantation
  • Post-operative titration and follow-up

The Process

  1. 1.Evaluation: Schedule a consultation with Dr. Jain to determine candidacy.
  2. 2.Insurance Verification: Our team submits prior authorization (typically takes 2-4 weeks).
  3. 3.DISE: ENT surgeon performs airway evaluation under sedation to confirm suitability.
  4. 4.Implantation: Outpatient surgery scheduled with Inspire-trained surgeon.

Out-of-pocket cost varies by plan (deductible, coinsurance). We provide detailed cost estimates after insurance verification.
