Battery-Free. Leadless. Future-Forward.
Dream Sleep Medicine is proud to be a Texas Pioneer in offering Genio® by Nyxoah, and one of the first clinics in the USA to publish post-FDA indication results. Dr. Jain serves as National Faculty, training other physicians on advanced Genio implantation and titration techniques.
Unlike traditional hypoglossal nerve stimulators (like Inspire), Genio uses a revolutionary battery-free design. A small implanted chip is powered wirelessly by a disposable adhesive patch you wear on your neck during sleep-meaning no implanted batteries to replace every 10-12 years. This is the future of sleep apnea therapy.
The Genio Advantage
Battery-Free Implant
The tiny implant has no battery. It is powered wirelessly by a disposable patch worn on the neck only during sleep. No battery replacement surgery ever needed.
Single Incision
Minimally invasive procedure requiring only one small incision under the chin. No chest incision for a sensor or battery pack.
Smart Control via App
No physical remotes to lose or charge. Control your therapy and track sleep usage directly from your smartphone via Bluetooth.
Bilateral Stimulation: Unlike Inspire (which stimulates one side of the tongue), Genio stimulates both sides of the hypoglossal nerve simultaneously. This bilateral approach can provide more comprehensive airway opening for certain anatomies.
How Genio Works
Apply the Patch
Before bed, apply a disposable adhesive patch to your neck (over the implant site). The patch contains the power source and wireless transmitter.
Activate via Smartphone
Use the Genio smartphone app to turn on the device. The patch wirelessly powers the implant and begins bilateral tongue stimulation.
Sleep Naturally
The implant gently stimulates both sides of the tongue throughout the night, keeping your airway open. Remove the patch in the morning.
The Science
Genio delivers continuous bilateral stimulation to the hypoglossal nerve (cranial nerve XII), which controls tongue movement. By activating both the left and right branches of this nerve, Genio prevents the tongue from collapsing backward during sleep-eliminating airway obstruction. The stimulation is mild, rhythmic, and typically imperceptible once you fall asleep.
The Genio Procedure
Single-Incision Surgery (90-120 Minutes)
Genio implantation is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes a single small incision under the chin (submental area) to place two tiny stimulation electrodes on the left and right branches of the hypoglossal nerve. The neurostimulator chip is also placed in the same pocket. No chest incision is required. Most patients go home the same day.
Recovery (1-2 Weeks)
Recovery is generally faster than Inspire due to the single-incision approach. Expect mild swelling under the chin, temporary tongue numbness, and soreness for 5-7 days. Most patients return to work within one week. Strenuous activity should be avoided for 2 weeks. Pain is typically managed with over-the-counter medications.
Activation (2 Months Post-Op)
After healing, you return to our clinic for device activation. We pair the implant with your smartphone app, provide patches, and gradually increase stimulation strength over several weeks. This "titration" period allows your body to adapt. Most patients reach therapeutic levels within 2-3 months.
Titration Sleep Study (3-6 Months)
Once comfortable with the device, we perform an in-lab titration study to optimize settings. Dr. Jain fine-tunes the stimulation parameters based on real-time sleep data, ensuring maximum efficacy. This advanced titration (which many practices cannot perform) is critical for optimal outcomes.
Genio vs. Inspire: Which Is Right for You?
| Feature | Genio® (Nyxoah) | Inspire® |
|---|---|---|
| Incisions | 1 (under chin only) | 2-3 (chin + chest) |
| Battery | None (external patch) | Implanted (10-12 year lifespan) |
| Battery Replacement | Never needed | Surgery required every 10-12 years |
| Stimulation Type | Bilateral (both sides) | Unilateral (one side) |
| Breathing Sensor | No sensor (continuous stimulation) | Yes (synced to breathing) |
| Control Method | Smartphone app (Bluetooth) | Handheld remote |
| Patch/External Component | Yes (disposable patch worn nightly) | No |
| FDA Approval Date | August 2025 | May 2014 |
Dr. Jain's Perspective
"Both systems are excellent. The choice depends on patient preference and anatomy. Some prefer Genio's battery-free design and single incision. Others prefer Inspire's breathing-synchronized stimulation and no external patch. As one of the few physicians trained on both systems, I can help you choose the best option for your specific situation."

Real-World Effectiveness
Genio's FDA approval was based on the DREAM pivotal trial, which demonstrated a median 70.8% AHI reduction and significant quality of life improvements. The earlier BLAST OSA trial led to European CE Mark approval in 2019. As a Texas pioneer site, we contributed post-market data showing comparable real-world effectiveness. Most patients experience reduced snoring, improved sleep quality, and daytime alertness.
Note: Approximately 70% of implanted patients meet success criteria. Candidacy screening and advanced titration are essential for optimal outcomes.
Insurance & Cost
Insurance Coverage
Genio is covered by Medicare and most major commercial insurance plans when FDA candidacy criteria are met (same as Inspire). Coverage typically includes:
- Pre-operative diagnostic testing
- Drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE)
- Surgical implantation
- Post-operative titration and supplies (patches)
The Approval Process
Our team handles all insurance paperwork, prior authorization, and benefit verification. The process typically takes 2-4 weeks. Genio and Inspire have identical coverage criteria in most insurance policies.
Patch Costs: Genio patches are disposable (worn nightly) and covered by most insurance plans as durable medical equipment (DME). Out-of-pocket costs vary by plan.
